YOUNG ACADEMY BOCCIA PLAYERS EXPERIENCES WORLD CLASS GAMES
Over the weekend of July 26th & 27th, a young Boccia Team represented Wales at the Cheshire International Open held at the very impressive Robin Park Arena, next to the JJB Football Stadium home to Wigan Football Club.
The competition saw teams from all over the world attending, with many of them making their final preparations for the Paralympic Games in Beijing. Amongst the teams were highly ranked potential medal winners, Canada, Portgual, Spain and GB themselves.
All the countries were impressed by the performances of the Welsh squad, and all noted how good it was to see young talented players coming through the system, as they said ‘The future looks bright for Boccia with players like these’. The youngest on the team were Harri Jenkins and Dylan Evans both 12 yrs old.
4 Teams represented Wales:
BC1/BC2 Team – Steven Evans (Torfaen) , Harri Jenkins (NPT), Dylan Evans (Denbighshire)
BC3 Pair (1) – Gareth Stafford (Wrexham) & Thomas Ciaburro (Bridgend)
BC3 Pair (2) – Karl Parrish (Monmouthshire) & James Bailey (Cardiff)
BC4 Pair – Jamie Gordon (RCT) & Jacob Thomas (Pembrokeshire)
Gerwyn Owen, Academy Manager said: ‘The event was targeted for the players to gain invaluable experience against the best players in the world. The players rose to the challenge and in fact took a number of ends from the top teams, with highlights including taking 2 ends off the Canadian BC3 pair. All the teams took an end off someone, with the BC4 pair winning a game off the Irish pair’.
Owen went on to say:‘The teams were so impressed with our players that they have invited them to go and train and compete at events in their countries, so who knows they will be gaining further international experience in the near future’.
The team was supported by the Disability Sport Wales Academy and Boccia Wales.
