Woolmore Retains National Wheelchair Bowls Singles Title
The 2008 National Wheelchair Bowls Championships took place recently at Stoke Mandeville IBC Aylesbury. A team of 6 Welsh bowlers entered the singles and pairs competitions.
In the pairs event Barbara Woolmore (Wrexham) Adrian Foley (Rhondda Cynon Taff) lost out only narrowly to Barbara’s husband Kevin who had teamed up with fellow Welshman Dave Powell (based in Bromsgrove). Woolmore and Powell then played Tony Down (Bristol) and George Ridgeon (Gloucester) and despite showing some promise Down and Ridgeon had to give second best to the Welsh lads losing 9-22. In the final the English pair of Percy Powell & Lea Davis took the title with a comfortable 22-10 win over Woolmore and Powell
Following up his success in the pairs Englishman Percy Powell was joined in the last four by fellow Englishman Paul Brown and two Welsh bowlers, Kevin Woolmore and the only female bowler to get to the last four in over five years, Brenda Penny (Colwyn Bay). Powell lost 12-21 to Woolmore whilst in the other semi-final Brown took a commanding 11-0 lead against Penny winning 21-5.
An Anglo-Welsh Final was set-up – Brenda Penny lost to Percy Powell 15-21 in a ply-off for third place; it was generally accepted that Brenda had performed superbly all week. In the Final Kevin Woolmore confirmed his ranking as UK’s No1 ranked wheelchair bowler by defeating Paul Brown 21-12. Kevin Woolmore is pictured below accepting his Singles Trophy.
