Welsh Disability Swimmer Qualifies for ASA Age Group Nationals

Welsh disability swimmer Morgyn Peters produced an outstanding performance at the South East Regional Championships, in Crawley, to qualify for the British Gas ASA Age Group Championships later this year in Sheffield by winning gold in the 100 metres backstroke.

Morgyn, who is 12 years old and is classified as an S9 swimmer, produced an extraordinary swim touching in with a time of 1:11.72, beating the closest able bodied swimmer by 1.66 seconds. Even more impressive is that, after an extensive amount of research, Morgyn’s time shows to be significantly faster than any other swimmer, we can find, of the same age and classification in the world.

National Disability Swimming Officer, Huw Griffiths said,

“Morgyn’s performance is a testament not only to the work that he puts in during training but also the work of his coaches at his club in High Wycombe. To reach the qualification standard for the Nationals, beating the rest of the field by such a margin and clock the time that he has is very impressive”. He added “Morgyn is one of a number of Welsh disability swimmers that are showing a great deal of talent and potential. The work that is being performed by clubs, coaches and swimmers across the country is very encouraging. I really think that disability swimming in Wales has a very bright future.”

Morgyn, who lives and trains in High Wycombe, is also a member of British Swimming’s World Class Talent Programme.
