Wales hosts World Tour wheelchair tennis event
Some of the top wheelchair tennis players will be in action in South Wales when the Esporta Cardiff Wheelchair Tennis Tournament takes place at the Welsh National Tennis Centre.Players from all over Britain, including members of the GB Paralympics squad, will be taking part, as well as one entrant from as far away as Brazil.
The men’s top seed is Scotland’s Gordan Reid, ranked 29 in the world, while the women’s top seed is Lucy Shuker – the world number 13 – from Somerset.
Welsh entries include 14-year-old Phil Cochrane of Cwmbran, ranked fifth in the world boys rankings, who will also take part in the men’s competition, and Debbie Brazier of Newport in the women’s event.
Pontypridd brother and sister, Shaun and Laura Swetman, compete in the novice and junior categories respectively, while the B category includes Wentloog’s Martin French – fresh from his success in the Belfast Open – and Trevor Mayo from Llantwit Major.
The Cardiff event, part of the NEC World Tour, approved by the International Tennis Federation, takes place at the National Tennis Centre, Ocean Way, Cardiff, on Friday to Sunday, October 17-19.
Spectators are welcome and admission is free. Play starts at 9.30am on Friday.
