Wales Deaf overpower England Deaf to retain Broadstreet Cup
Wales deaf retained the Broadstreet Cup with a hard fought eight try 55 – 10 victory over a determined and courageous England deaf side at Pontypridd.
Playing for the Broadstreet Cup, England took the field with nine new caps and dominated the early exchanges.
However Wales took the lead after six minutes with outside half Richard Lewis (Dunvant) kicking a penalty. Shortly afterwards, a speculative kick into the Wales 22 resulted in an awkward bounce for full back Mark Withey and the loose ball was gathered by alert England centre Guy Lavery (Tunbridge Wells) who went over in the corner.
Wales quickly hit back through winger Nigel Francis (Tonmawr) who scored the first of his three tries after 17 minutes. Richard Lewis converted to put Wales 10 – 5 in front.
Outside half Lewis then extended Wales’ lead with a well taken try which he also converted to give the home side a 17 – 5 lead at half time.
Shortly after the re-start, winger Francis raced in for his second try following a break from a scrum on the half way line.
Wales continued to dominate territory and possession and some excellent interplay between the home side’s forwards and backs resulted in further tries for James Evans (Birchgrove), Gareth John (Tonmawr) and Ian Rowberry (Worcester Students).
Outside half Lewis completed a satisfying performance with another two conversions. Replacement full back Celyn Ashton (Treorchy) earning his first cap also converted two tries.
England finished strongly and were rewarded with a try from hooker Matt Vandenbrouck (Paignton) following some strong forward surges into the Wales 22.
With the last play of the game, powerful Wales number eight Adam Brake (Pontypool) crashed over for a try to round off a perfect afternoon for coach Steve Commander, who took charge of the team for the final time following four successful years at the helm.
