The World’s top riders head for Newport this Sunday !
This weekend (Sunday 24th May) sees some of the World’s top Paralympic riders head to the Wales National Velodrome in Newport for the UCI Wales Disability Grand Prix of Wales.
Now in its fourth year the Grand Prix has a reputation for attracting the top riders, but also as the place to debut for new talent and this year is no exception.
Flights from North and South America will be busy in the coming days as riders make the trip across the Atlantic from Brazil , USA and Canada . Our European neighbors’ have also joined up once again; with for the first time two tandem pairs from the Netherlands making the trip.Returning for the fourth year, but this time as multi Paralympic gold medalists are two riders who started their competitive cycling careers at the Grand Prix in 2006, Jody Cundy and Simon Richardson.
Cycling debuts are one more the order of the day at the event and post Beijing see’s some very interesting moves by Paralympians from other sports.
First up, climbing out of the pool onto the back of the tandem is Jenny McCoughlin with double Beijing gold medalist Ellen Hunter as her very able pilot.
The sport of athletics has the biggest transition of Beijing athletes to cycling with Tracey Hinton teaming up with Bex Rimmington, Neil Fauche joining Olympic, Commonwealth Games medalist and former World Champion Craig Mclean on another tandem and Stephen Payton hanging up his spikes and switch to the boards in the CP3 category.
With World ranking points up for grabs the competition will once again be entertaining with first event scheduled for 10am; spectator entry is free, so come along as watch the action.
