Swimming: Paralympian hero David met fans

PARALYMPIC gold medallist David Roberts inspired young athletes when he visited them at a sports camp at his former school.

The local hero was special guest at Star Track – a week of track and field training and events for children aged eight to 14, which was held at Bryn Celynnog School, Beddau.

The swimming star answered the youngsters’ questions and showed them one of the 11 gold medals he has won at Paralympic Games. Each child had the opportunity to wear the medal and have their photo taken.

Star Track was run by Rhondda Cynon Taf Sports Development.
Sports development officer Stuart Finlay said:

“The week was a great success, with coaches doing a fantastic job to ensure all the children had an enjoyable and educating experience.”

The final day was a day of competition, with children putting all the practice into action.

“Star Track has given youngsters the chance to try all athletics track and field events.

We hope that it may encourage them to keep participating in athletics and who knows one of them may become the next Paralympic or Olympic champion.”
