Swim Wales and Kellogg’s splash out for clubs
Aquatics clubs and other groups around Wales are being offered a cash boost to help them encourage new swimmers.
Swim Wales, the governing body of aquatic sports in Wales, has announced a new £20,000 Innovation Fund, as part of the Kellogg’s Swim Active Wales programme, and is now inviting applications.
Clubs, schools, colleges, local authorities and owners of private pools which are open to the public, are all being asked to put forward ideas about how they would like to encourage people to take part in regular aquatics activities.
“This is a great opportunity to put creative ideas into action,” said Catrin Devonald, director of development at Swim Wales. “We want to hear about new ways to encourage people to take part in aquatic sports.
“We’re particularly keen to see ideas which will help people from areas of social deprivation, who may not always have the opportunity to enjoy the huge social and health benefits which swimming and other aquatic sports offer.”
Approved projects would be funded for a year, but in some cases could be continued in the longer term. Matched funding is preferred but not essential.
Projects which encourage priority groups, with low participation levels in swimming – including women, ethnic minorities and the disabled – will be especially encouraged as will projects run in partnership with local authorities, Sport Wales or a local regeneration partnership, to ensure local strategic relevance and maximum community benefit.
“This is a new and exciting development for swimming in Wales – a unique opportunity for Kellogg’s to make a real difference to people’s lives by introducing them to aquatic sports,” said Bruce Learner, Kellogg’s Community Sponsorship Manager.
The deadline for the first round of applications is Friday May 28, but proposals will be welcomed throughout the year, with the assessment panel meeting quarterly. Deadlines will be published on the Swim Wales website.
