Strong performance from the Welsh Athletes at the National Table Tennis Championships.

Welsh players dominated the National Table Tennis Championships held in Crewe recently.

Scott Robertson (Class 5) of Flintshire, dominated the wheelchair class taking Gold in the Wheelchair Open Event beating James Rawson, English Number 1 in the final 3-0. He also won Gold in the Class 4/5 Singles Event, Scott won against Mark Palmer of England in the final. He went on to a hat trick of wins with a Gold in the doubles event with his partner James Rawson of England.

Another excellent performance of the weekend by Sara Head (Class 3) of Beddau, taking Gold in the Open Female Wheelchair Class Event beating current British Number 1 and World Number 3 Sue Gilroy (Class 4), winning 3-1.

In the Class 2/3 Female Wheelchair Singles Event, Sara won against Cathy Mitton of England in a won sided final, the result being 3-0. She also won a Bronze Medal won by Sara in the Team Event with her partner Leanne Stephens of England.

Claire Roberston (Class 4) of Flintshire, performed really well although she was unwell during the weekend, Claire won Bronze in the Open Event. A very good performance. Claire also won Bronze in the Doubles Event with her partner Sue Gilroy of England.

Paul Karabardak, Class 7 of Swanea. Paul lost unexpectedly in the semi-finals of the Singles category to Joe Stodbury of England, finishing in third place with a Bronze. In the Standing Open Event Paul lost in the semi finals to Kim Daybell Class 10 of England, finishing in third place with a Bronze.

Academy Athletes

18 year old Gareth Jones of Wrexham, Class 6 Standing, a very good performance from Gareth on reaching the final of the Mens B Open Standing Category, unfortunately Gareth came up against a very experienced Class 9 English player, Sean Alvey. Gareth finished with a Silver.

21 year old Ashley Davis of Cardiff, Class 3 Wheelchair, a good performance by Ashley in his very first competition, playing in the B Open Event Wheelchair category reaching the semi-finals, Ashley finished with a Bronze. A really good performance from someone who has only been training for 8 months. Ashley now realises the high standard he must achieve and the training he needs to put in to improve.

17 year old Thomas Matthews of Aberdare, Class 1, once again this was Tom’s first competition playing in the Junior Event, showed a lot of maturity considering he has only been playing for 3 months, finishing third with a Bronze. Tom is looking forward to his next competition and also realises the amount of work that is required to achieve his goals.
