Nottingham Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament 2008

The last British wheelchair tennis tournament on the NEC World Tour, took place at the Nottingham Indoor Centre between 29th October – 2nd November 2008.

Representatives from Wales in the Main Draws included up and coming teenager Philip Cochrane (Cwmbran) and Debbie Brazier (Newport), and in the Junior draw brother and sister Shaun and Laura Swetman (Pontypridd) took up the Welsh mantel.

Philip had an excellent start with a win over GB’s Shaun Regan and put up a strong fight in the second round, eventually succumbing to the more experienced 5th seed and world number 38 GB’s Mark McCarrol. His first round win earned him valuable ranking points and moved him to 114 in the Men’s world rankings and 7 in the Boys world rankings.

Debbie had a tough first round draw against the 4th seeded and world number 15 Katerina Krugar from Germany and lost in straight sets. However she went on to win the Consolation Final with a victory over Britain’s Louise Hunt and the ranking points moved her up to 62 in the world rankings to cap three good tournaments in a row. She is hoping to go further when she goes to the Prague tournament at the end of November.

Shaun Swetman had a fantastic run in the round robin Junior event and went on to win the Junior title and is now ranked number 14 in the World junior ranking, whilst sister Laura put up a brave battle and gained invaluable experience for future events.
