Newport Velo to Celebrate 5th Birthday
Once upon on a time one Saturday morning, a group of young riders assembled at the newly constructed Wales National Velodrome in Newport, full of anticipation and energy as they prepared to ride the amazing new facility for the first time.
That was back in May 2004 and now five years on the “youth only” club has established itself as one of the largest “Go-Ride” youth cycling clubs in the country with 90+ active members.
Coaching is the backbone of the clubs success with a constant investment in coach education supported by sponsors Newport Transport, resulting in the club presently having 9 British Cycling qualified coaches on hand to deliver the skills and structured development to the clubs young riders every week.
One thing the club also prides itself in is its fully inclusive approach to disability cycling, which sees both Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls riding alongside each other.
During the clubs very short history, it has already proved to be an exceptional development ground for the talent of the future with current Senior Ladies National Scratch Champion Hannah Rich, three of the present ODP riders, Sam Harrison, Jon Mould and Lewis Olivia and last but not least Paralympic multi-gold medallist Jody Cundy starting out on the boards one Saturday morning.
The party to mark this major anniversary in the clubs history will be on Saturday 9th May at 10am, with some special celebrity guests lined up.
The club would like to welcome back for a special morning celebration all those riders who started the careers with them and have now moved to Junior and beyond !
