Newport Celebration of Sport Awards 2008

Vote for Newport’s Sports Personality of the Year!
The nominations for this year’s award are Liz Johnson (pictured here), Ryan Jones and Christian Malcolm. Vote now for your favourite using the online voting form.

The closing date for votes is Wednesday 1st July 2009.

The Awards ceremony will be held at the Newport Centre on Sunday 5th July at 4.30pm. A limited number of tickets will be on sale from Monday 22nd June from the Newport Centre or by telephoning the council on (01633) 656656. Tickets cost £3.00.

Celebrating achievements from the 2008 sporting calendar
The Newport Celebration of Sport Awards recognises contributions to all areas of sport and physical activity including participation, performance, volunteering and school and club based activity and development.

Other award categories include:

Newport’s Junior Sports Personality of the Year This award recognises the achievements of a junior sportsperson, it is an inclusive award and applications are welcome from sports people with a disability. Nominees must have been under 19 on December 31st 2008.

Newport’s Unsung Hero This award is for a volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to sport over many years. It is not necessarily for individuals who coach or manage a club but also those who work behind the scenes, e.g. caretaker, green keeper, committee members etc. It will be judged on a nominee’s area of work, representation on committees, achievements in developing or supporting sport, average weekly commitment and the number of years involved in sport.

Newport’s Club of the Year This award recognises clubs that are committed to their ongoing development. Nominations will be assessed on criteria such as coach development, junior development, partnership working including Club/Community/School Links. Organisational structure including governance, policy implementation and committee structure. The club should demonstrate a commitment to equality e.g. inclusion of sportspeople with a disability, adult participation opportunities. The achievements of teams and individuals within the club in 2008.

Newport School Sport Award This award recognises the school who are committed to the development of sport and PE both curricular and extra curricular. Schools must demonstrate or be working towards developing partnerships, club/community links, participation in wider schemes. Provide leadership/training opportunities for both staff and/or pupils. In addition to providing opportunities for pupils to participate in a variety of sporting activities.

Contribution to Disability Sport in
Newport This award recognises an individual or club who are committed to the development of disability sport and increasing opportunities for participation in sport for people with disabilities in Newport.

Newport’s Club Volunteer This award recognises the efforts of an individual who has shown outstanding commitment and drive within their club. The award seeks to acknowledge the importance of the volunteer who works behind the scenes. Nominations are welcome from administrators, secretaries, officials, treasurers, committee members etc.

Newport’s Coach of the Year This award recognises the efforts of all local coaches both voluntary and professional who have made a substantial contribution to their sport and club. Nominations are assessed

on the coaches’ qualifications, average weekly time commitment and the progress and achievements of performers and teams being coached.

Newport’s Community Champion This award recognises the service to the community that an individual has demonstrated in the field of sport. It acknowledges their involvement in voluntary sport and how they have inspired their community to be active in 2008.

Newport’s Sports Leaders UK
Award This award recognises an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to their personal development through completing

the Sports Leaders UK Award through the Sports Development Unit. As a result of achieving this qualification they have shown a commitment and enthusiasm for their own development and a commitment to providing quality opportunities for the young people that they coach.

Newport’s Going for Gold Award This award recognises the commitment of an individual to the Going for Gold Scheme. The person who has achieved the highest number of attendances in activity sessions.
