NEWPORT ACE BRAZIER’S BEST PERFORMANCE AT CARDIFF TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Esporta Cardiff Wheelchair tennis Tournament 2008 attracted both a high quality field including both men’s and women’s GB No1’s (Reid and Shuker respectively) and a record number of juniors and novice players from all over GB, and with two entrants coming from Jersey and Brazil.

Gordon Reid, from Helensburgh, Scotland, edged experienced Yorkshireman Kevin Plowman 7-6(0), 7-6(4) to clinch his fourth senior singles title of 2008. Meanwhile, Taunton-based world No 13 Lucy Shuker eased through her four round robin matches in the women’s singles with successive straight sets wins to lift her second title of the season.

Newport’s Debbie Brazier played some of her best tennis in years to secure runner-up spot in the in the women’s round robin matches winning three of her four singles matches. She also got to the women’s doubles final with partner Maddy Lumb, from Bridgend, but they were beaten by Louise Hunt from Swindon and Samanta Almeida from Brazil 6-1, 6-3.

14 year old Philip Cochrane (pictured here), from Cwmbran, acquitted himself very well in the men’s main draw defeating Ade Adepitan 6-2, 6-2 in the first round. In the second round he came up against No.2 seed Marc Mccarroll from London and although he lost 6-3, 6-2 there was plenty of encouragement in the performance for Philip. He is now ranked 135 in the men’s world ranking.
Shaun Swetman, from Pontypridd, was probably the unluckiest player of the tournament in that he reached three finals, Novice Singles, Junior Singles and Novice Doubles only to fall ill and be unable to compete on the Sunday.
