LUCKER SIGNS UP FOR UKA HEROES

ABERGAVENNY Paralympic hopeful Daniel Lucker has set his sights on glory on the world stage after a weekend to remember in Bedford.

16-year-old Lucker, predominantly a middle distance racer, has been selected for the IWAS Junior World Championships in Nottwil, Switzerland in July.

And the Crickhowell High School pupil will head to Switzerland high in confidence after being unveiled in Bedford as part of the UK Athletics Heroes Project. Lucker is one of 15 up-and-coming athletes that will receive financial bursaries to help towards their ultimate dream of representing Team GB at the Paralympics in London.

It was a double celebration for Lucker as he also picked up the up and coming disability athlete award from the British Athletics Supporters Association.

And the 16-year-old – who competes for Disability Sport Wales Academy – is anxious to continue the winning trend when he gets to Switzerland in July.

“It’s great that people have started to notice me,” said Lucker.
“The season has gone well so far but I’ve got to keep going and improving my times. “I’ve got the world juniors coming up in Switzerland and I want to win at least a couple of gold medals.

“I’ve gone up an age group to the under-18’s so I will be one of the youngest but that doesn’t bother me – I still think I can bring some gold medals home with me.”

Lucker underlined his potential by winning the Junior London Marathon in April – finishing over two minutes clear of the rest of the field.

And the 16-year-old is not looking to waste any time as he looks to fast-track himself into the selector’s plans for London 2012.

“I’m aiming to get in the seniors as soon as possible but I know they will know who I am and will be trying desperately to keep holds of their places and keep me out,” said Lucker.
“2012 is the main aim for me and if I keep working as hard as I am at the moment then I should be OK for that, which would be amazing.
“To win the supporters award was great. People like Ian Jones and Katrina Hart have won that in the past and gone on to bigger and better things so it’s up to me to do the same.”

The UKA Heroes project sponsored by Original Source is a successful initiative which offers financial support to talented young athletes who are working towards the 2012 and 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
