HEROES PARADE INSPIRES FUTURE STARS
As our Beijing Paralympic Heroes parade through the streets of London, young Welsh athletes look to aspire to the same heights in London 2012 by stepping up their training and competition programme.
20 of the FDSW Athletics Academy will be put through their paces over the weekend, where fitness, skill and endurance testing will be the main part, whilst also a review will be made with each athlete and their coaches on their development up to date and their future path.
FDSW Academy Manager, Gerwyn Owen said: ‘It is going to be a tough weekend for the athletes where they will be tested in every department of their development. Most of the sessions will be practical based – sprinting, throwing, endurance etc, but also we’ll be able to sit down with each athlete individually and look at their previous performances and map out where they should be going in the future.
‘Hopefully they will have been inspired and motivated by the success of Team GB out in Beijing, and also see how well Welsh athletes did in the Games. For many in the Athletics squad they have followed closely the performances of Welsh athletes such as John McFall, Nathan Stephen, Jenny Mcloughlin and Kate Arnold who have come through our Talent and Academy programmes.
‘Many of the guys have been working towards London 2012 for the last couple of years, and the weekend will reinforce the message to the athletes that they are on the right track and that Disability Sport Wales will ensure as much support as possible for them to reach their goal’
The training will take place at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff on Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 4pm. For further information contact Academy Manager Gerwyn Owen on 07918716344.
