HENRY CAPTURES GOLD IN RIO

Rhiannon Henry took top spot in the women’s S13 100m butterfly final.

Henry, originally from Bridgend but now studying in Montreal Canada, took Gold in her favoured event out in the IPC World Short Course swimming Championships in Rio, Brazil.

Ellie Simmonds, who trains out of the Wales National Pool in Swansea, clinched two more gold medals as Britain added a further five titles.

The double Paralympic champion, 15, set a world record in her 200m individual medley final and took a second gold with the 4×100m freestyle relay team.

Simmonds smashed the previous world record by almost 10 seconds, recording a time of three minutes 8.80 seconds.

Natalie Jones and Elizabeth Johnson, (Newport) completed an all-British podium finish.

“I am really happy with that,” Simmonds said. “It was a really tough race but I knew it would be.

“I knew Natalie was going to push me all the way so I worked hard. It was really hard to get that medal.

“I knew that in the last 50m I had a chance to take her and I saw her in the last 50m and I just pushed it.”

There was yet another medal for Simmonds in the women’s 4×100m alongside Stephanie Millward, Lauren Stedman and Louise Watkin.
