DET LSP launched in Caerphilly – a resounding success

The first FDSW Disability Equality Training workshops aimed at Leisure Service Providers ran in Caerphilly at the end of September. The well attended course was a testament to the hard work and effort invested in the launch of the training programme by the DSWDO Paul Taylor (who also co-tutored the workshop), Chief Leisure Officer Peter Gomer, and other staff in the Sport Development department. The workshop aims to up-skill and confirm existing good practice for all staff working within a leisure facility; it has been specifically designed for leisure service personnel and intended to ensure that leisure facilities across Wales continue to provide good service to disabled customers.

The workshop was extremely well received by the delegates, with comments provided on the evaluation forms reflecting the excellent quality of information provided by the tutors, the interesting and useful content, and relaxed but educational environment achieved. One delegate summarised that this is a ‘lovely training course and I think it is really needed in the services and is a positive way forward’

The FDSW Disability Equality Training (Leisure Service Providers) workshop has recently gained endorsement from The Institute of Sport and Recreation Management to allocate 25 CPD points to members of IRSM when building their CPD portfolio. ISRM is the professional body for those involved with managing, operating and developing sport and recreation services in the UK, and challenges its members to ‘Gain the Competitive Edge’ by gaining 100 CPD points each calendar year. FDSW Education and Training Consultant, Fiona Reid, said ‘it is fantastic to link the DET (LSP) workshop in with ISRM CPD points; we are really keen to ensure that all our training packages are relevant and useful to the industry – gaining these points has helped confirm this’

The allocation of the 25 CPD points is aligned against professional learning and development (CPD type A), fitting in with the criteria identified below:

• Evidence of learning from other relevant courses and seminars ran by e.g. Youth Sport Trust, Sports Coach UK, national governing bodies, Sport England
• Evidencing learning as identified by PDP, from sources such as meetings, discussions, publications, internet, ISRM information articles, mentoring, employee development review schemes, etc.
• Completing any of the following: ISRM National Pool Plant Operators course, ISRM Spa Pool Operators course, NPLQ 7th Edition Unit 2 T/A Course, Special Event Management course, Child Protection course, Serving Disabled Customers training.

Members can set up their CPD portfolio without charge online, and can chose to submit their evidence either online (through the same portal as the one used to enter information on) or in written format. See www.isrm.co.uk/education/docs/CPDinfoleaflet2008_Doc_B.pdf for further detail.
