DAN EYES THIRD TRIUMPH TO RETAIN HIS TITLE
Wheelchair racer Dan Lucker is heading to London once again this weekend to defend his title at the Adidas London Mini Wheelchair Marathon (26th April 2009).
The Abergavenny racer, Junior World Champion and one of Britain’s most promising stars has been racing competitively for three years and hopes to begin his competition season this year with a record time in London.
Three time Paralympian, Chris Hallam, has coached the sixteen year old since 2006 where he broke onto the scene winning his first London Mini Wheelchair Marathon.
Since then he has developed his tactical ability as well as his strength and fitness to endure competitions such as the UK School Games and the Disability Sports Events Junior National Championships where his persistence in training has paid off.
Dan took time out from his busy schedule to tell us how he is preparing to speed past his rivals in London,
“I have trained well over the winter and can’t wait for the start of the season. My first race will be on the road in the Adidas Mini London Wheelchair Marathon. This will be the fourth time I have done this race and it never fails to deliver. It is a great course with amazing crowd support – it really gets the adrenalin pumping.
I won the race last year in 13m 10s, beating race favourite and Paralympic silver medallist Mickey Bushell by over a minute. This year I am looking for a faster time and hope that will be enough to win me the race. I feel strong and confident but in wheelchair racing you never know what the day might bring.”
Over the coming months, Daniel will compete at both junior and senior track and road competitions. The highlight of 2009 will come at the IWAS Junior World Championships in Switzerland where hewill be competing in the under 18 category.
