Cochrane's Super Series Finale
The last Super Series event before the Beijing games, took place at the Nottingham Tennis centre. This was the 19th year the event had been running at which all of the world’s top players were in attendance.
Welsh representation in the form of Sean Sweatman, Debbie Brazier and Philip Cochrane did us proud this week.
Debbie entered in the Over 35’s competition this year, a first round win over an Austrian male opponent led Debbie to a competitive defeat against Sunday’s finalist from the Midlands in the shape of experienced Tim Phillips.
In the ‘B’ Division event, Mid Glamorgan’s Sean Swetman had a tough first round draw against Scotland’s Ryan Macdonald, who is a past winner of this division. Sean will have learned from his outing however and managed to get to the finals of both the ‘B’ singles consolation event for the first round losers and the doubles event with his partner from Israel the remarkable Michel gaye who is 71 years young!.
Acadamy athlete, Philip Cochrane, contested the Men’s 2nd Draw singles and doubles. In a tough draw which included Paralympians and full time athletes, Philip lost a tight second round match to his Sri Lankan opponent who is able to play for 4 hours per day.
However, with this dissapointment put firmly behind him, Phil came within a whisker of winning the same sections doubles event, losing out 7-6, 6-4 with his London partner Andrew Lapthorne.
They travel expectantly onto Utrecht in the Netherlands for the ITF series one event on Monday. Sean will be attending the Junior Wheelchair Tennis Camp sponsored by former football legend Johann Cruyff at the same city.
