Bridgend athlete an ambassador for London 2012

A BOROUGH sportsman has been chosen as BT’s ambassador for London Olympics and Paralympics in 2012.

Nathan Stephens of Kenfig Hill, a former pupil of Ynysawdre Comprehensive School and now a student at UWIC, is one of Britain’s most promising young disabled athletes.

His recent achievements include winning a gold medal in both the shot put and the javelin at the inaugural London Disability Athletics Challenge at Crystal Palace.

At the British Junior Championships, his first major competition, he won three gold medals and set two new records. He also finished fourth in the London Junior Marathon.

Despite losing both his legs on his ninth birthday, when he slipped and was hit by a train while playing on a railway line, Stephens firmly believes his quality of life has improved since the accident.

He said that he has met great people, and is doing far better in sport than he would have done otherwise, adding: “I’ve got no regrets really.”

Sport, particularly rugby and football, was no more than a hobby for Stephens as a child, but following the accident it became the main focus of his life.

He concentrated on developing his upper body strength and discovered he had a talent for a wide range of sports, including swimming, athletics and sledge hockey.

He is the youngest member of the Great Britain sledge hockey squad and trains each week with his side, the Cardiff Huskies.
