BEIJING-BOUND CHIN WINS NATIONAL AWARD AT JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Becca Chin from Deganwy, North Wales returned from the DSE Junior Athletics Championships in Blackpool with the ‘Outstanding Performance’ Award, achieved for her record-breaking performances in the Shot and Discus events.
Chin, 16yrs old, and already selected to represent Great Britain at Septembers Paralympic Games in Beijing, showed her class at the event run by Disability Sport Events which saw many of the talented young athletes in the UK amongst the 450 entrants.
To add to her award she also set National Junior Records in both events. These two records were amongst the 18 set by Welsh athletes at the event. The team were made up of 20 Disability Sport Wales Academy Athletes, who are on the pathway to future glory, with the Paralympic Games in London 2012 an obvious target.
Academy Manager, Gerwyn Owen said ‘The event in Blackpool is very important in the calendar for our athletes. It is a culmination of the previous year training and competition programme. Year on year we see an improvement in our young talented athletes performances, and to have Becca Chin gaining the ‘Outstanding Performance’ award is a tribute to the work of not just her but the whole team, whether Staff or athletes in the preparation and delivery within a competitive environment’
Owen went on to say ‘In addition to Becca’s achievement, other highlights included 3 National Records for thrower Aled-Sion Davies (Bridgend) and Wheelchair Racer Daniel Lucker (Abergavenny). Davies is very much on form, and over recent months have set new IWAS Junior World Records in the Shot and Discus, whilst Lucker is off to the IWAS Junior World Championships in New York at the end of this month. Also we had a debut by Cardiff Sprinter, Jordan Howe, who set 2 new National Records in the Under 15 60m & 100m races, and he’s still only 12yrs old.’
