Archers enjoy success in Arizona

Great Britain’s Paralympic archers won a team silver and two team bronzes against Paralympic and able-bodied rivals at the Arizona Cup.

The women’s compound team of Pippa Britton (pictured left – from Newport) Dani Brown, and Sharon Vennard lost 215-211 to the USA in their final.

The men’s compound team of John Stubbs, Fred Stevens and Kevin Hyde had to be content with bronze after losing to the US in their semi-final.

There was also bronze for the men’s recurve team.

Paul Browne, Kenny Allen and Murray Elliott lost out to Norway in the last four.

“It was a fantastic effort and a really upbeat way to round off the tournament,” said GB Paralympic coach Tim Hazell (from Newport).

“To compete on an even level against strong, able-bodied teams is a great achievement and what made it extra special is that all three medal-winning teams included a member of our development squad.”

Earlier in the tournament, Brown, who celebrated her 21st birthday last weekend, broke the International Paralympic Committee world best for 70 metres with 342 points from 36 arrows – 12 over the existing record.

She also set a new best for the IPC Fita with a score of 1362 and equalled the world best for 60m.
