Another Golden Day for Wales

Sports Minister Alun Ffred Jones has offered his congratulations to today’s Welsh winners at the Beijing Paralympics. Simon Richardson and Ellen Hunter both added to the gold medals they won on Sunday, Nyree Lewis took silver in the 100m backstroke and Jody Cundy scored gold in the 1km time trial.

Sports Minister Alun Ffred Jones said:

“What another extraordinary day in Beijing for our Welsh Paralympians! Simon Richardson really is making his mark, with his second gold in two days and a world record under his belt, and then Ellen Hunter put in a spectacular performance as co-pilot in the 3km pursuit, beating the Australian favourites.

“I am also really impressed with Jody Cundy from Swansea. He made a fantastic start in the time trial and his gold and it’s incredible to think that this is his fourth Paralympic gold in all. Congratulations also to Nyree Lewis on gaining silver, today. These athletes have shown us the true value and ability of sport to enrich our lives. For such a small nation, we are showing that we can compete on a world stage and outshine the rest. They are an inspiration.”
