Disability Equality Training: Coaches, Leaders and Volunteers (CLV)
Coming Soon!!
Coaches, Leaders and Volunteers provide the practical experiences in which disabled athletes develop their sporting skills, whether it is with the intention of becoming an elite performer or for the enjoyment and challenges sport and physical activity provides. Sport offers all athletes with the opportunity to not only develop physical, technical and tactical skills, but also psychological, social, and lifestyle skills, as well as developing health benefits associated with exercise. It is important that when coaches, leaders and volunteers plan their sessions that they do so to reflect the interests and needs of the performer, and to ensure that the athlete participates in a safe, learner-centred environment. A holistic understanding of how to make sessions accessible to all individuals in the coaching group / session is essential, and this workshop is intended to develop and extend the coaches, leaders or volunteers’ knowledge of, and confidence in providing accessible sessions which are beneficial to all athletes, whether disabled or non-disabled.
The workshop will be a mixture of group discussions, provision of relevant and useful information, and the practical application of relevant and appropriate examples. Specific scenarios have been developed to stimulate discussion, highlight particular concerns expressed by athletes, coaches, volunteers and leaders, and adopt a problem solving approach to the provision of participation or performance coaching opportunities to disabled athletes.
The workshop includes the following areas:
1. Perceptions and experiences
2. Terminology
3. Overview of the Legislation
4. Barriers to participation
5. Opportunities for participation
At the end of this workshop you should be much more aware of barriers that may be encountered by disabled athletes, and how you can work together with other people inside and outside of sport to overcome them.
This workshop will be available from the end of December 2008.
