CATCH UP OF WEEKEND ACTION FROM BEIJING

For those of you who didn’t catch the games on tv over the weekend, here’s a brief round up of the action.

Saturday
In their respective table tennis quarter finals Britain’s women’s class 4-5 team of Welsh player Claire Robertson teamed up with Sue Gilroy to lose 3-0 to Serbia.
In the men’s quarters Britain’s class 3 team of Welsh player Neil Robinson and James Rawson beat Libya 3-0, while the class 6-8 team of Welsh player Paul Karabardak and Will Bayley were defeated 3-0 by China.

The sailing regatta in Qingdao finished with dissapointment for team GB. Our Welsh sailor Stephen Thomas fought hard alongside fellow sailors John Robertson and Hannah Stodel who finished sixth in the Sonar three-person keelboat, the same result they recorded in Athens four years ago.

Cycling hero Rachel Morris finished in sixth place in the individual hand cycling road race (HC A-C).

Morris, who won gold in the women’s individual time trial on Friday, could not maintain the fast pace set by winner Andrea Eskau of Germany.

Welsh cyclist Simon Richardson finished 10th in the LC3-4/CP3 category.

Sunday
British sprinter John McFall won bronze in the T42 100m final as the track action began in Beijing on Sunday.
The Cardiffian, 27, was yellow-carded after a false start, but recovered to finish third with Canada’s Earle Connor winning gold in 12.32 seconds.

Swimmer David Roberts has equalled the record medal haul of 11 Golds, held by Tanni Grey Thompson, to become most successful Paralympic athlete.

Roberts, from Llantwit Fadre, went into the S7 50m Freestyle as favourite, after a strong swim in the morning heats. However Roberts knew the task would be a hard one, with his main rival Matt Walker qualifying 2nd in a good time.

However, Roberts powered through to Gold in a Paralympic Record of 27.95secs, just 0.28secs outside his own World Record.

Monday

Welsh runner Tracey Hinton has ran a season’s best of 26.58s to qualify for the T11 200m final on Tuesday.

Rhiannon Henry set a new British record in the women’s 50m freestyle (S13) final, but the Canada-based swimmer finished seventh in a time of 28.59secs.

The British 4×100m Medley relay quartet (34 points) of Sam Hynd, Sean Fraser, Rob Wellbourn and our very own David Roberts finished in fifth place as Australia smashed almost 11 seconds off the world record with a time of four minutes 11.90secs

Liz Johnson finished 8th in the S6 50m Freestyle event.
