BEIJING PARALYMPICS BLOG DAY 4

Water Cube saw World standards tumble as David Roberts took Gold in the 4 × 100m Freestyle Relay. Roberts, now has 9 Paralympic Gold Medals in his collection, and still has another 3 races to go.

The GB relay squad went into the race favourites, being Paralympic Champions from Athens in 2004 and World Record Holders. Their main threat always has always come from Australia, which in Athens Team GB just pipped the Aussies by a finger nail. This time, however, the British quartet of Roberts, Graham Edmunds, Rob Wellbourn and Matt Walker, was over a body length clear of the Aussies, breaking the World Record by over 7 seconds.

To add to the Welshman Roberts in the squad, both Edmunds and Wellbourn train at the National Pool in Swansea under the guidance of Billy Pye, National Performance Coach.

Elsewhere in the Pool, Rhiannon Henry swam in the S13 100m Freestyle final, which saw Canadian Valarie Grand-Maison win yet another Gold Medal, her third of the Games. Henry, from Bridgend but based in Canada at the University of Montreal, finished 7th.

Over in the track, Welsh based rider, Jody Cundy won yet another Gold, this time in the Team Sprint. The GB Cycling Team has contributed 12 Gold Medals to the overhaul GB haul, emulating their able-bodied riders in the Olympics.

Cundy, living in Swansea but training at the National Velodrome in Newport, was joined in the team by Darren Kenny and Mark Bristow, who blasted the home-nation team from China.

Over on the Shunyi Rowing Lake, James Roberts from Swansea, was in the Reperchage of the Double Sculls along with Northern Ireland rower, Karen Cromie. They had to finish in the top two of their race to make the Final, which will be held tomorrow. They made it comfortably through, coming 2nd to the Australian pair. They now only have 24 hours to recover to go head to head with the high ranked Brazilian, Chinese and Italian crews.

Over on the Basketball court, it looks unlikely that the Women’s team will progress through to the Quarter finals after losing to the USA Team.
