BEIJING PARALYMPICS BLOG DAY 1

Reporting from Beijing, Jon Morgan and Gerwyn Owen, will be regularly updating this website, as the results roll in at the Beijing Paralympic Games.

The first GB medal, as in the Olympics, has been won by a Welsh Cyclist. Simon Richardson, from Porthcawl, took the Gold Medal in the 1km Time Trial LC3/LC4 Class, in a new World Record time of 1:14.93.

In his first Paralympic Games, Simon displayed all of the attributes of a seasoned athlete, as he powered through the 1km Trial, destroying the opposition by a clear three seconds. Simon has a further three medal opportunities during the Games.

The second Gold Medal for Team GB was won in the Velodrome, and again a Welsh influence was felt, as Ellen Hunter, from Wrexham, piloted visually impared Aileen McGlynn to Gold in another World Record time of 1:09.06. Having seen the Australian pair set a new World Record in the previous heat, the GB pair had to go under 1:1046 to secure first place. Cheered on by her mentor, husband Paul Hunter, both riders eased their way to become Paralympic Champions for the second successive Games, in the 1km Time Trial.

Paul said: ‘It was awesome performance, given the intense pressure they were under’.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment in the pool as Nyree Lewis finished 6th in the SM6 200m IM, whilst Rhiannon Henry, Bridgend, came 5th in the S13 100m Butterfly. However both will be back in the water over the next couple of days to redeem themselves.

Darren Harris, having chosen to take part in the Judo 66kg event, rather than the Blind Football, fought a tough battle against the Venezualan Marcos Falcon, taking the fight all the way, but narrowly missed out on points.

Table Tennis saw mixed results with Neil Robinson having a walk over against his opponent, whilst Clare Robertson and Paul Karabardak lst their opening round games.

Further news will be posted on this wesite regularly, so please log onto to find out how our Welsh athletes are doing.
