10 out of 10 for Roberts in the Pool.
David Roberts keeps on producing in the pool, this time in the 400m Freestyle S7 classification. And yet again another World Record is broken by the Swansea based swimmer. However he was disappointed with his swim, claiming he wanted to go seven seconds faster!
Meanwhile in the Shynui Rowing lake, GB Double Sculls pair, James Roberts from Swansea and Irish partner Karen Cromie, went in a tough final which was won by home-nation China. The GB pair just missed out on 4th by just a metre. Considering the illness, injuries and technical training the pair have endured over the year, the pair will be pleased with making the final and ranked 5th in the World now.
James Roberts, was supported by the Disability Sport Wales Academy system in his tranference from Swimming to Rowing. Other athletes who have been or still in the Academy were also on show today:
In the Birds Nest, personal best times were made by former member Kate Arnold in the T46 200m and Becca Chin, youngest Welsh member of Team GB at only 16yrs old, and still a Academy member threw a personal best throw in the Shot Put in 10.85m, to finish 10th in the T37/38 event. Beverley Jones finished fifth with a season best 10.35m.
Former Academy member Jenny Mcloughlin (pictured here), ran a strong race in the heats, just missing out on progressing through to the next round.
Elsewhere in the National Stadium, Tracy Hinton qualified to the final of the T12 400m race, whilst Brian Alldis couldn’t progress in the T53 800m wheelchair race.
Outside of Beijing, in Qingdao, the sailing crew in the Sonar, including Stephen Thomas from Bridgend, moved up a position after race 6, now joint 6th. Race 7 was postponed due to the lack of wind.
On the Archery field, Pippa Britton from Newport, lost to GB team-mate Mel Clarke, by 110 to 106.
The Wheelchair Basketball players, Claire Strange and Caroline Matthews, fought hard in the GB team against but narrowly lost by 50 to 44 points.
On the football further disappointment was had by the GB Blind football team, including Keryn Seal from Bridgend. They lost 3 – 1 to Spain.
